Gas Pipeline to Spalding Power Station

Penspen entered an engineer, procure and construct (EPC) contract with Spalding Energy to deliver a working gas pipeline system to deliver fuel gas to a new 800 MW CCGT power plant at Spalding. Penspen provided the engineering and procurement services and employed a pipeline construction contractor to build the pipeline and its above ground installations. Penspen provided total project management and construction management of the construction contractor.

The project comprised a gas offtake facility from the National Transmission System, a 7.3 km buried pipeline with a design pressure of 79.5 barg and a pressure reduction and metering station at the power plant. Other facilities include:

  • A major river crossing (River Welland)
  • A major road crossing (A16, by horizontal directional drilling (HDD))
  • Four minor crossings by HDD
  • Two minor crossings by auger bore
  • Auxiliary boiler fuel pipeline
  • Gas supply pipeline within the power plant (200,000 Sm3/hour)
