The TAP project is the development of initiatives launched in the 1990s to transport gas from surplus capacity in Turkmenistan via Afghanistan to markets in Pakistan and/or to liquefaction on the coast of Pakistan.
The pipeline originates at the Dauletabad field in SE Turkmenistan and runs for about 1,700km on either a northern route via Kabul or a southern route via Kandahar, in either case supplying the accessible Afghan gas demand, transiting Pakistan to join the Pakistan gas infrastructure and, potentially, to enter the presently unsupplied north India gas market.
The techno-economic feasibility study is designed to eliminate one of the route options and to derive capital and operating costs and thence gas transportation tariffs for the selected route.
