Project Background

Switzerland requires new transport infrastructure to enable large scale CO₂ management and support multiple industrial emitters, including waste incineration, cement plants and industrial plants. Our client, CO2 Pipeline Schweiz AG, needed a robust high-level pipeline infrastructure design that could inform future investment decisions while also helping to establish appropriate technical standards for CO₂ pipelines in the country. Penspen were appointed to deliver a pre-FEED study for a proposed CO₂ transport network linking Basel and Zurich, with options for wider connectivity across eastern and central Switzerland. The study supports the early development of a national CO₂ pipeline system aligned with Switzerland’s climate objectives.

Services

Led by Penspen’s teams in Aberdeen and London, UK, our engineers provided technical definition of the pipeline backbone and associated facilities, including hubs, intermediate valve stations, compressor stations and ancillary equipment. In addition, Penspen’s scope also includes support to the routing studies, site selection, economic evaluation and input to regulatory and standards compliance for CO₂ transport systems.

Result

This pre-FEED study supports the development of an at-scale CO₂ transport system capable of serving a range of emitters across Switzerland. In doing so, it contributes to the country’s longer-term emissions reduction strategy and the establishment of shared carbon infrastructure.

Drawing on Penspen’s extensive international CO2 pipeline engineering experience, this early-stage study provides a structured technical foundation for future CO₂ transport development in in the region. By addressing design, routing and standards in parallel, the work supports consistent decision making and reduces uncertainty for subsequent project phases.
