The UAE is shaping the future of energy through major infrastructure projects that support national goals for energy security and sustainability. Central to this progress is the development of Emirati talent, equipping the next generation of engineers with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the nation’s vision.
Shorouq Ali Ahmed Mohamed Aldhanhani is part of this new generation of talent. Through Penspen’s dedicated Emirati Graduate Programme, she is building her career, gaining hands-on experience, and applying her technical knowledge to some of the most transformative energy projects across the Middle East.
A Passion for Engineering and Impact
“I chose engineering because it enables tangible impact and supports the UAE’s rapid growth. There’s real satisfaction in solving technical challenges and seeing how they contribute to national progress.”
Shorouq’s journey began with academic distinction, graduating from Khalifa University with both a Master’s in Engineering Systems and Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, during which she won the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for her excellent performance. Her early career included working at the UAE Ministry of Defence, where she gained experience in project management, research and development, and engineering operations, laying a strong foundation for her future at Penspen.
Bridging Academic Excellence with Real‑World Engineering
Shorouq joined Penspen through Penspen’s Emirati Graduate Programme, a 12-month structured development programme designed to accelerate the careers of young Emirati engineers by providing exposure to core disciplines, mentorship from industry professionals, and live projects. The programme helps talented graduates transition into technical or project management roles while actively contributing to the UAE’s energy sector.
“It was the programme’s structured approach and exposure to real projects that attracted me most. It gave me a platform to apply what I learned academically, while learning from experts in a globally respected consultancy.”
Within the programme, she gained practical experience through technical workshops, project involvement and interdisciplinary collaboration, essential steps in turning theoretical knowledge into professional capability.
Being selected for a programme focused on nurturing Emirati talent is not just a career milestone for Shorouq , it reflects her pride in contributing to national aspirations around building local engineering expertise.
“It’s something I’m truly proud of — to be part of a programme dedicated to empowering Emirati engineers and aligned with the UAE’s vision for the future.”
Stepping into a Growing Role
Shorouq began her Penspen career developing her engineering fundamentals before progressing into her current role as a Junior Proposal Engineer. In this role she works on preparing technical and commercial proposals, engaging with multiple disciplines, and understanding client needs.
“One of the highlights has been contributing to strategic proposals and seeing how teamwork transforms opportunities into successful project awards,” she explains. “The transition into this role has strengthened my communication, coordination and commercial awareness, helping me grow both technically and professionally.”
For Shorouq, the most fulfilling aspect of her work is the sense of responsibility that comes with contributing from the earliest stages of a project:
“The most rewarding part of my role is being involved from day one and helping shape outcomes that matter. I’m proud of the confidence I’ve gained, the trust my team has placed in me, and the progress I’ve made in developing my capabilities in a relatively short time.”
Life Beyond the Office and Looking Ahead
Outside of work, Shorouq enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, reading, and constantly learning. She recently completed a Research Diploma in Advanced Project Management from the Cambridge College of International Studies to broaden her knowledge beyond her day‑to‑day role.
“It’s essential to balance professional life with activities that help you reflect, relax, and return to work with renewed energy.”
As Shorouq looks toward the future, her goals are focused on continuous growth in her role and advancing her expertise:
“For the rest of 2026 and beyond, I aim to build on my experience, take on larger projects with greater confidence, and earn professional certifications that strengthen both my technical and career development.”
