Project Background

A major fuel terminal in the United Kingdom operates a critical loading line that supports regional fuel distribution. This pipeline system is essential for maintaining safe, continuous terminal operations and must perform reliably under both steady-state and transient conditions.

As part of planned system upgrades, including pipeline modifications and the introduction of new pigging facilities, assurance was required that transient operating conditions, particularly shutdown events, would not compromise pipeline integrity.

Penspen was engaged to deliver a combined hydraulic transient and pipeline stress assessment to support the safe implementation of the proposed changes in accordance with PD 8010-1 requirements.

Services

Penspen carried out an integrated hydraulic and structural assessment to evaluate pipeline response during key operational and shutdown scenarios. The scope included:

  • Developing a transient hydraulic model in VariSim to simulate shutdown events, including pump-on and pump-trip conditions
  • Modelling realistic valve closure behaviour and representative operating profiles
  • Assessing transient pressure behaviour across the pipeline system
  • Developing a structural model in AutoPIPE for a representative section of the line
  • Applying transient hydraulic outputs as time-dependent loads at critical locations, including bends and crossings
  • Assessing combined loading conditions, including pressure, temperature, environmental effects, and support constraints
  • Verifying pipeline stresses against PD 8010-1 design requirements

Result

The assessment confirmed that the loading line can operate safely under transient conditions and remains compliant with applicable design standards. Key outcomes included:

  • Identification of transient effects as the primary driver of pipeline response
  • Confirmation that stresses and displacements remain within allowable limits across all assessed scenarios
  • Identification of localised areas where operational awareness and targeted inspection may be beneficial
  • Validation that no modifications to the existing support configuration were required

The study provided confidence that the pipeline system can accommodate planned upgrades without compromising safety or performance, supporting the continued reliable operation of a critical fuel supply asset.
