Corrosion Assessment Services for a Large-Scale Battery Storage Project in KSA
Corrosion protection design for steel structures in harsh desert conditions
Project Background
Penspen was awarded a contract by one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy companies to provide corrosion consultancy services for a large-scale battery storage project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The scope of work focused on assessing the corrosion protection required for steel module mounting structures, both above and below ground, to ensure structural integrity over a design life of 25 to 30 years.
Services
Operating from Penspen’s Abu Dhabi office, our Asset Integrity team conducted a comprehensive desktop corrosion study. The assessment aimed to determine the appropriate corrosion protection measures for the steel mounting structures in one of the region’s harshest desert environments, known for extreme temperatures, atmospheric salinity, and abrasive sand and dust conditions.
The scope of work included:
- Corrosion protection design & evaluation
- Interpretation and application of local, national, and international corrosion standards
- Detailed analysis of environmental and atmospheric data including pollutants, microclimate conditions, and cyclic corrosion effects
- Service life calculations and performance forecasting for protective coatings
- Recommendations for both above-ground and buried structural elements
Result
Our team delivered a site-specific corrosion protection strategy tailored to the project’s environmental challenges. By interpreting regional atmospheric data and aligning our recommendations with industry standards, we delivered:
- Coating specifications designed to withstand the site’s unique corrosive factors
- Long-term service life predictions to match project design requirements
- Value engineering opportunities through alternative mitigation strategies to optimise CAPEX
Commenting on the project, Gordon Philip, Director of Asset Integrity – East Region, said: “We are delighted to have been entrusted with this critical assessment for a project that marks a new milestone in the country’s renewable energy expansion. The outcomes of our Corrosion Protection Design and Evaluation services provide the client with assurance that the predicted corrosion loss accurately mirrors real-world conditions. By integrating site-specific meteorological and environmental data, we have successfully delivered reliable, fit-for-purpose protective coating recommendations aligned with the full design life of the structures.”
