Project Background

One of the United Arab Emirates’s largest and oldest onshore fields continues to play a critical role in the nation’s energy sector. To support growing energy demand and maintain the integrity of existing assets, Penspen has been engaged to conduct a ductile fracture control study for a CO₂ handling pipeline associated with enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations at the field.

Services

Penspen’s Asset Integrity and Materials Engineering teams in the MEA region will deliver the study, supported by subject matter experts from Penspen’s Centre of Engineering Excellence (CEE) for ductile fracture control.

The study will cover:

  • Identification of appropriate mitigation measures to prevent fracture initiation
  • Definition of the material properties that will arrest a running ductile fracture (e.g. material impact toughness) and additional measures (e.g. fitting fracture arrestors) as required
  • Definition of the material properties that can prevent brittle fracture propagation

Result

The study will ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the pipeline by identifying fracture risks and defining appropriate control measures, supporting the ongoing success of EOR initiatives in the region.

With extensive global experience and a strong track record in ductile fracture control, Penspen has the technical capability to address complex pipeline integrity challenges and support the UAE in meeting current and future energy demands.

Commenting on the project, Nick Molnar, Director of Asset Integrity at Penspen, said: “The award of this ductile fracture control study highlights Penspen’s expertise supporting efficiency initiatives across the energy value chain. Mitigating ductile fracture in dense phase CO2 pipelines is an area of significant study in industry, and we are proud to continue to solve complex challenges for our Clients that contribute to increased efficiency, safety and reliability.”
