Project Background

DAR, one of the world’s leading consultancies, awarded Penspen a contract to conduct a comprehensive gap analysis for the aviation fuel systems at Hamad International Airport in Qatar.

This analysis is a key element of the airport’s master plan, which outlines its long-term strategy for development and expansion. The primary objective is to evaluate whether the existing aviation fuel system can support the airport’s projected growth and future demand. Penspen’s assessment will help determine if updates to the master plan are necessary to ensure the airport’s continued efficiency, safety, and capacity to accommodate increasing air traffic over the next 20 years.

Services

Engineers from Penspen’s regional head office in Abu Dhabi, UAE, oversaw the project and delivered key services as part of the gap analysis scope of work, including:

  • Data Collection & Review – Evaluating existing aviation fuel infrastructure.
  • Demand Analysis – Forecasting future fuel requirements based on air traffic projections.
  • Capacity Assessment – Determining system capabilities and identifying any gaps.
  • Optimisation Recommendations – Providing technical insights into operational efficiency and potential upgrades.

Result

Penspen’s gap analysis, based on air traffic projections, confirmed that the existing aviation fuel facilities are sufficient for the ultimate phase outlined in the master plan. As a result, no additional investment is required, saving the client significant CAPEX. With the updated master plan, the airport operator now has a clear, data-driven roadmap for future development and investment.
