Project Background

Our client, a global engineering company, awarded Penspen a contract to support the preparation of a new master plan for Al Maktoum International Airport (AMI) in the UAE. Penspen was tasked with validating the existing jet fuel gas system, which was originally designed by Penspen, to align with the updated designs for Phase 1 and the ultimate phase of the new airport master plan.

AMI is being developed to replace Dubai International Airport, aiming to become the world’s largest passenger airport when fully operational. In Phase 1, it will have the capacity to handle 130 million passengers per year, with plans to reach 220 million annually upon full completion.

Services

Engineers from Penspen’s regional head office in Abu Dhabi, led the project and delivered a range of engineering services, including:

  • Data Analysis to evaluate current and projected fuel demands.
  • Master Plan Assessment to ensure alignment with future operational needs.
  • Development of Fuel Facilities Master Plan Report outlining the updated design and layout.

Additionally, the team assessed the area requirements for future expansion of aviation fuel facilities and worked on safeguarding key plots and corridors for future development.

Result

Penspen’s expertise in validating and updating the jet fuel system, along with conducting a comprehensive master plan assessment, ensured that Al Maktoum International Airport’s fuel infrastructure is optimised for future growth. This strategic planning will support the airport’s capacity to handle increasing fuel demands, streamline operations, and enable a seamless transition as aviation operations shift from Dubai International Airport to AMI.
