Project Background

The client, a processing plant located in Europe, requires a Corrosion Risk Assessment Study (CRAS) and Risk Based Inspection Study (RBI) during the FEED phase. They want to evaluate the probability of metallurgical degradation caused by corrosion from internal process conditions and external corrosion mechanisms. Additionally, they are interested in identifying corrosion critical piping/equipment, establishing Integrity Operating Windows, and determining the location of corrosion monitoring programs based on applicable degradation mechanisms.

Services Provided

A Corrosion Risk Assessment Study (CRAS) and Risk Based Inspection (RBI) plan for a process plant in the FEED stage. Both studies were performed in accordance with international standards such as API RP 571 Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry and API RP 580 & 581 Risk Based Inspections and in alignment with company standards.

The CRAS was used to verify the materials selected for the design and proposed corrosion control methods in place. The RBI was used to produce a long-term inspection plan for the process plant, which was risk based to ensure appropriate allocation of resources in the future integrity management of the plant.

Finally, taking cognisance of the findings of the CRAS and RBI, integrity operating windows were specified for the plant in accordance with international standard API RP 584 to ensure that limits were put in place to prevent excess degradation of the process unit due to the identified damage mechanisms.

Result & Value

Penspen provided valuable support to the client by verifying the suitability of material selection for the proposed design, ensuring that the future inspections of the process plant were optimised by prioritising high-risk items. The client was also provided with access to Penspen’s experts in corrosion, material selection, risk-based inspection, and asset integrity across our regions for the project. This comprehensive expertise helped the client make informed decisions and maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.
