Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing how the energy industry approaches pipeline integrity, from inspection and anomaly detection to predictive analytics and engineering decision support. But in a safety-critical environment, the key question is not simply whether AI can help, but where it can be trusted and where experienced engineering judgement must remain central.
In the August edition of World Pipelines, digital experts from Penspen and Persona Dynamics examine this question through the evaluation of Aura, the AI-based technical advisory capability within THEIA – Penspen’s digtial integrity management solution.
The evaluation tested Aura against real-world pipeline integrity questions submitted by practising engineers, with responses assessed blind by nine independent subject-matter experts. The findings provide quantitative evidence of both the potential and limitations of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) as an engineering decision-support tool, including a direct and significant relationship between the breadth of the underlying knowledge base and response quality, and a sharp decline in actionability as question complexity increases.
