Asset Integrity and Management Services for ENGIE Pipeline Systems in Mexico
Project Background
ENGIE operates one of Mexico’s largest natural gas transportation and distribution networks, supplying energy to more than 3.5 million people and serving over 650,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Its infrastructure includes more than 13,200 km of steel and polyethylene pipelines across multiple regions of the country, as well as over 1,300 km of transmission pipelines that form a critical part of Mexico’s natural gas supply network.
ENGIE’s extensive network of pipelines and associated facilities spans more than ten states and is exposed to a wide range of environmental, operational, and product-related conditions. These varying conditions can contribute to corrosion, material degradation, and other integrity threats that have the potential to impact safety, reliability, and business continuity.
Services
Since 2022, Penspen has supported ENGIE Mexico in the delivery of asset integrity and asset management services across its natural gas infrastructure.
In 2024, the two companies strengthened their collaboration through a Master Services Agreement (MSA) through to 2028 for the provision of on-call specialist asset integrity and management services. The agreement covers pipelines and facilities located across the Bajío region, State of Mexico, Jalisco, Hidalgo, Mérida, Puebla-Tlaxcala, Querétaro, Reynosa-Matamoros, Tampico, and San Miguel de Allende.
Under this framework, Penspen’s in-country team provides multidisciplinary technical support throughout the pipeline and facility integrity management cycle. Services include:
- Integrity and Fitness-for-Service (FFS) studies
- Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) studies and fatigue analysis
- Excavation services for verification and direct inspection of defects detected during internal instrumented tool (ILI) runs
- Design, supply, and installation of non-metallic enclosures for pipeline components
- Determination of location classes for gas pipelines
- Identification, lifting, and classification of pressure vessels
- Technical review of ICDA and ECDA methodology reports, and internal and external corrosion integrity assessments
- Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) re-evaluation and integrity analysis services for surface facilities
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of pressure vessels and process piping
- Technical workshops
Result
Through the Master Services Agreement, ENGIE has on-demand access to specialist integrity and asset management expertise across its pipeline and facility portfolio. The flexible call-off model enables the swift mobilisation of technical resources, supporting proactive risk management, regulatory compliance and the continued safe operation of critical natural gas infrastructure throughout Mexico.
