Managing Electrical Interferences in Pipelines – A Practical and Cost-Effective Approach

The rapid expansion of AC/DC transmission networks, electrified transportation systems and pipeline infrastructure has increased the spatial overlap among these assets. As these networks become increasingly co-located and power demand continues to rise, the likelihood of electrical interference affecting pipelines increases. In particular, AC interference presents newer and more complex challenges than the better-understood effects of DC interference.

While both AC and DC interference can pose safety hazards and accelerate pipeline deterioration, immediate mitigation is not always the most appropriate response. Electrical interference is technically complex, capital intensive and not always warranted, and its presence does not necessarily indicate stray-current corrosion. Applying risk management principles to the detect–mitigate cycle helps distinguish conditions requiring prompt intervention from those that can be managed through monitoring, enabling more effective, proportionate decision-making.

Improving decision-making in electrical interference management

In a new technical paper, first presented at the 2026 Pipeline Technology Conference, industry experts from Penspen, Promigas and Petroleum Development Oman present a framework for managing electrical interference risks.

Designed to keep the risk of electrical interference-related failures within the As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) range, the framework actively manages the probability component of risk while integrating industry-aligned technical criteria with business risk management principles. The result is a consistent, transparent and cost-effective approach to decision-making that supports improved resource allocation without compromising pipeline safety or reliability.
