As global industries accelerate towards decarbonisation, green ammonia is emerging as a key enabler for low-carbon fertilizer production and the storage and transport of green hydrogen at scale. However, developing reliable and commercially viable ammonia facilities in remote, off-grid environments presents major challenges, from renewable intermittency and storage requirements to system integration, infrastructure and cost optimisation.

In this paper, Nigel Curson, Executive Vice President of Technical Excellence at Penspen, and Bilal Hassan explore practical strategies for designing and optimising off-grid green ammonia projects. Using an Excel-based simulation model, the study evaluates renewable hybridisation, battery and hydrogen storage, renewable oversizing and ammonia synthesis flexibility to assess their impact on plant performance and levelised ammonia production costs.
