The global transition to hydrogen is accelerating, and repurposing existing natural gas pipelines is a critical step towards a low-carbon future. However, ensuring the feasibility, safety, and reliability of this transformation requires a structured approach.
In a new technical paper presented at the 2025 Pipeline Technology Conference, industry experts Nigel Curson, Benjamin Cowell, and Luke Fahy introduce a structured methodology for screening natural pipelines for hydrogen repurposing. The approach assesses key factors such as coating condition, the availability of material and welding records, encroachment risks, burial depth, valve suitability, and environmental impacts, providing a comprehensive framework for evaluating pipeline readiness.
The methodology is illustrated through two real-world case studies: one featuring an ageing pipeline with limited historical data and legacy design considerations, and another involving a modern system built to current engineering standards. These examples reveal common risks, practical mitigation strategies, and valuable lessons for pipeline operators navigating hydrogen conversion.
Download the paper to discover how this structured process can support safer, more efficient hydrogen repurposing, helping operators meet the demands of a cleaner energy future.
