As the global push for net zero intensifies, Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) is emerging as a critical technology to decarbonise energy supplies and industrial processes. With the potential to deliver rapid emissions reductions and unlock new revenue streams [i] , CCUS is gaining momentum worldwide.
At the 2025 Pipeline Technology Conference, Penspen’s Principal Consultant Engineer, Toby Chancellor-Weale, presented a comprehensive new paper analysing four CCUS projects that Penspen was involved in during the design stages. These projects, delivered by Penspen for clients across the UK and internationally, range widely in scale from 50,000 tonnes to 7 million tonnes per year, covering test facilities to large-scale operations.
The paper explores the economic, technical, and operational challenges across the entire CCUS value chain, from capture and transportation to processing and underground storage. Drawing on Penspen’s direct experience, it provides valuable insights into design considerations, project risks, and the commercial factors essential for successful future CCUS deployment.
